Staying Well as Seasons Change

From daily movement and mindful breathing to hydration, protein, and vitamin D, our Director of Wellness shares simple ways to stay healthy and strong as the seasons shift.
1. Movement made easy
As the seasons shift, it’s the perfect time to enjoy gentle activity both indoors and outdoors. Try taking the stairs where possible, add regular walks, or incorporate low-impact exercise like water aerobics. A morning walk in early autumn light not only boosts Vitamin D but also supports mood and energy.
2. Stress hack: Planned sighing
Start and end your day with this simple technique to enhance wellbeing and manage stress effectively - incorporate it at strategic moments of the day:
- Upon waking up
- Before meals
- Prior to or during stressful situations
- When experiencing anxiety
- Before bedtime
Try this mindful breathing practice to promote relaxation and support your overall health.
3. Hydration check
As the weather shifts, don’t let cooler days fool you. Stay ahead of dehydration. Invest in a water bottle with measurement markers to track 6 - 8 cups daily. Add mint, cucumber or berries for flavour, or try coconut water for a natural electrolyte boost.
4. Evidence-based supplement
Vitamin D3 tops the list - essential for bone strength, immune support, and mood, especially with age-related absorption changes. Consider 1,000–2,000 IU daily if not getting regular sun exposure (always check with your doctor first).
5. Protein power
Older adults need more protein. Start the day with 20-30g with breakfast from sources like Greek yogurt, protein kefir by Biotiful, eggs, or salmon to support muscle skeletal health.
Stay well, stay strong.
